“swissmilk green”: The new industry standard for sustainable Swiss milk
The level of the Swiss dairy industry is already high by international standards. To allow this fact to be advertised in marketing, the new industry standard for sustainable Swiss milk, “swissmilk green”, was launched in September 2019. Milk and dairy products that satisfy the requirements of “swissmilk green” can be sold with the new label.
There are already a good number of labels on the Swiss market relating to sustainable production – particularly in connection with dairy products. “swissmilk green”, which is intended to be used alongside existing private labels and brands, sees itself as the new standard in the Swiss dairy industry. With this programme, the trade organisation of the milk industry is a pioneer for all other sectors of Swiss agriculture.
Many producers, especially in the Swiss variety cheese segment, comply with the “swissmilk green” rules virtually right away. The new label aims to standardise and – if necessary – raise the high level maintained by the Swiss milk producers in terms of animal welfare, feeding, regionality and health.
